The new orthopaedic workshop in Makeni

In recent years, during on-site visits, we have noticed that the working conditions in the old workshop were very limited and actually inadequate. It was only a small room in a woodshed. This was not a solution for the future.

Through the training of five young people, three women and two men, initiated and financed by Bintumani D-SL and Rotary Kieler-Förder, it became clear that a change was necessary. The space was too small for the now six orthopaedic technicians.

Enable Salone Workshop, with the orthopedic master Mr. Ibrahim Mosto Conteh, presented us with plans for a larger workshop building. But with it also the calculation and the question of how this can be managed financially.

Through an application to the Foundation North-South Bridges (BMZ) and Bintumani D-SL’s own funds, it was possible to start construction. It started with the planned total sum of approx. 25,000 €.

From January 2024 to October 2024, the new building was then organized and carried out by the ngo Enable Salone Workshop. A remarkable achievement.

First, all the necessary stones were poured piece by piece. Then concrete pillars were installed on the floor slab. Between the pillars, the walls with the cast stones were raised. Hundreds of bamboo and wooden sticks then formed the support for pouring the ceiling. Everything was done by hand, without machine support!

The hard work paid off. In the end, a workshop building with an area of about 180 square meters and nine rooms was built.

In November 2024, Dr. Sönnichsen (RC Kiel Fjord), Dr. Ladipoh and Norbert Hoffmann (both Bintumani D-SL) had the honor and pleasure of participating in the ceremonial opening of the new orthopedic workshop.

The Paramountchief, the mayor of the city and province of Makeni and all the construction workers were present. All young orthopaedic technicians, their trainers and teachers as well as many patients from the past year with their new prostheses were also present.

During the event, the new young orthopaedic technicians received their certificates

.
In the spirit of sustainability, ten young trees were planted to shade the house in the future.

The project for the construction of the new orthopaedic workshop was completed with a small celebration.
