Ear, nose and throat practices in Sierra Leone
For the 8 million inhabitants in Sierra Leone, there is currently only one ENT doctor. In recent years, Bintumani D-SL has contributed to the improvement of this situation by setting up ENT examination units that have been handed over to us in Berlin and Brandenburg. These screening units were set up at Connaught Hospital in the heart of Freetown, as well as Jui Hospital on the outskirts of Freetown.
Together with the investigation units, the necessary examination instruments were also handed over. Dr. Ladipoh, who regularly visits Sierra Leone, gives instructions on the use and care of these devices and instruments.
At our suggestion and recommendation, two young general practitioners have decided to complete a three-year specialist training in Accra, Ghana. These doctors will later manage the ENT practices that have been set up. In addition, nursing staff are also trained in performing simple examinations and treatments.
There are plans to introduce hearing tests and balance tests. In the long term, we would also like to offer hearing screenings before children start school. In addition, we are aiming for a connection to an ENT department in Berlin, including the possibility of telemedicine.
