Training as an orthopaedic technician
Education plays a central role in the development of an independent and sustainable future in Sierra Leone. It is also a crucial part of our cooperation project with the NGO “Enable Salone Workshop”.
To ensure that our work in the orthopaedic workshop has a long-term effect, we have launched a training programme. The aim is to give young people the opportunity to learn a qualified profession – and thus also to earn their own income.
In close cooperation with the experienced senior orthopaedic technician Ibrahim Mosto Conteh and other specialists on site, we have developed a practical training. Three young women and two young men take part. You will gain basic skills in orthopedic technology within 18 months. This includes, above all, the manual steps involved in the production of prostheses, but also the understanding of the needs of the patients.
The training not only offers career prospects. It also strengthens the self-confidence of the participants and enables them to actively contribute to the improvement of health care in their region.
The training was made possible thanks to the initiative of Dr. Sönke Sönnichsen from Kiel. He was able to inspire the Rotary Kiel Fjord Association for this project. Through their support, the instructor, the lessons, the training salary and the necessary materials were financed. We say thank you very much for that!
